Aux Sable

One of the largest NGL extraction and fractionation facilities in North America, Aux Sable processes liquids rich gas at the terminus of the Alliance Pipeline, in Channahon, Illinois.

U.S. Operations

Aux Sable Liquid Products

Aux Sable Liquid Products (ASLP) owns and operates one of the largest natural gas liquids (NGL) extraction and fractionation facilities in North America.

Channahon NGL Extraction & Fractionation Facilities

The facility is located in Channahon, Illinois, about 50 miles southwest of Chicago near the eastern terminus of the Alliance pipeline. Since commencing operations in December 2000, ASLP has processed over 7.3 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and has produced over 13 billion gallons of specification NGL products. The facility is capable of processing 2,100 million cubic feet per day of natural gas and can produce approximately 131,500 barrels per day of specification NGL products. All of the gas delivered via the Alliance Pipeline is processed at ASLP’s Channahon NGL Facility.

Aux Sable Midstream

Aux Sable Midstream (ASM) owns and operates the Palermo Conditioning Plant and the Prairie Rose Pipeline.

Palermo Conditioning Plant and Prairie Rose Pipeline

The 80 mmcfd Palermo Conditioning Plant removes condensate from rich field gas prior to shipping to Alliance via the Prairie Rose Pipeline. The Prairie Rose Pipeline connects the Palermo Plant to the Alliance Pipeline, which delivers liquids-rich gas to Aux Sable’s Channahon, Illinois facility for processing. ASM is pursuing other NGL processing and midstream initiatives, primarily driven by the shale oil and shale gas developments in the Midwest and Northeast United States.

Canada Operations

Aux Sable Canada

Aux Sable Canada (ASC) is an active midstream player in Western Canada, primarily along the Alliance Pipeline corridor. We provide customized midstream solutions to producers to effectively develop and produce gas reserves rich in liquids. Our midstream services include construction and operation of processing plants and pipelines.

Heartland Offgas Plant (HOP)

Aux Sable’s strategy also includes building, owning and operating offgas processing facilities, such as the Heartland Offgas Plant in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, for the heavy oil upgrading and refining industry in Western Canada.

Septimus Pipeline

The Septimus Pipeline, wholly owned by Aux Sable Canada, is located near Fort St. John, in Northeastern British Columbia. Constructed in 2010, the 20 inch diameter / 12 mile (20 km) length pipeline transports sweet, liquids rich natural gas from the Montney Shale Area to the Alliance Pipeline, for downstream processing at Aux Sable’s Channahon NGL Extraction & Fractionation Facility. The pipeline was constructed and sized to accommodate potential future volumes from regional producers in the liquids rich Montney gas play.

The company continually strives to meet high standards in these areas, to comply with appropriate financial and regulatory controls, and to be a responsible participant in the local communities where it has operations.

Rail Safety

We are committed to safe and reliable energy transportation, and our rail loading operations are expected to meet or exceed those same high standards. Aux Sable’s rail operations play a major role in the economical transportation of high-quality energy products to markets in the U.S. and Canada.  Aux Sable maintains a fleet of approximately 300 leased rail cars and safely loads an average of over 6000 per year.

History

Aux Sable commenced operation on December 1, 2000 as part of the Alliance Pipeline and Aux Sable dense phase gas system. At that time, two companies were established, one in the United States, Aux Sable Liquid Products (ASLP)  and one in Canada, Aux Sable Canada (ASC) to manage the natural gas liquids business associated with the Alliance Pipeline. In 2010, a second U.S. company, Aux Sable Midstream (ASM) was established to focus on other midstream developments in the United States. In 2024, Pembina fully consolidated ownership of all Aux Sable assets. Learn more.

A Proven Success

Since 2000, Aux Sable has delivered outstanding safety, environmental and operating results. Aux Sable is well positioned to pursue its vision through the utilization of the Alliance liquids-rich gas transportation system, as well as growth opportunities outside of its exclusive natural gas liquids position with the Alliance system.

The Aux Sable Name

Aux Sable derived its name from the Illinois township where its NGL extraction and fractionation facility was sited in 1996. The Aux Sable Township itself was named by the original French Canadian settlers who traveled to and from the sand bar on the local creek to access water – Aux Sable means “to the sand” in French.
